On Tuesday, the Supreme Court granted interim protection from arrest to YouTuber Ranveer Allahabadia, who is facing multiple FIRs across India over offensive remarks made during his appearance on the show India’s Got Latent. The court’s order stipulates that Allahabadia must fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
The Supreme Court also directed that no further FIRs be filed against him based on the episode of the show. Additionally, the court mandated that Allahabadia deposit his passport with the police and prohibited him from leaving the country without court permission.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court expressed its displeasure over Allahabadia’s remarks, questioning the boundaries of obscenity and vulgarity. The court also asked Allahabadia’s lawyer about the parameters of what constitutes inappropriate language.
The case stems from Allahabadia’s comments on the show, which sparked widespread outrage. In response, Allahabadia filed a plea seeking the consolidation of multiple FIRs lodged against him, arguing that he should not face repeated legal proceedings for the same incident.
The Maharashtra Police’s cyber cell has instructed Allahabadia to join the investigation on February 24. The probe is focused on his controversial remarks, which have led to FIRs being filed by the Maharashtra Cyber Department, Guwahati Police, and Jaipur Police.
The Supreme Court also condemned the behavior, emphasizing that such language and conduct must not be tolerated. “Just because someone becomes popular, does that give them the right to speak recklessly and disregard the entire society? Is there anyone who would accept such language? There seems to be something deeply inappropriate in his mindset,” the court remarked.
