The inaugural Kerala Film Policy Conclave, launched by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram on August 2, began with a strong emphasis on addressing key challenges facing the Malayalam film industry, including inclusivity, work culture, and protection from online abuse.

Prominent film personalities, including superstar Mohanlal, participated in the first-of-its-kind initiative, which aims to shape a more structured and equitable future for the state’s film industry.

Day one of the conclave featured five panel discussions focusing on issues such as defined working hours, fair employment practices, work overload, job security, and the urgent need for legal safeguards against online hate and cyberattacks.

State Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cherian briefed the media, highlighting the demand for mandatory gender representation in grievance redressal cells and the creation of a state-level jury to select films for festivals.

“There was also a notable public concern raised about the high cost of food items sold in theatres,” Cherian added. “The industry is not inherently problematic; these are isolated issues. A robust policy framework will enable stricter action when needed.”

Chief Minister Vijayan emphasized the significance of the conclave as a landmark step toward transforming Malayalam cinema. He also commented on the recent 71st National Film Awards, particularly acknowledging the wins for The Kerala Story, which bagged Best Director and Best Cinematographer.

The Kerala Film Policy Conclave continues with further discussions planned to frame actionable reforms for the regional film industry.
