The mortal remains of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg were flown from Delhi to Guwahati on Sunday and taken to his residence, as fans and admirers across Assam mourned his untimely demise.
Garg, fondly remembered as the “King of Humming,” passed away in a scuba accident in Singapore on September 19, leaving millions of admirers across the region and beyond in shock.
At Guwahati airport, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita joined grieving fans to pay their respects. In Guwahati, supporters lit candles and offered prayers, recalling the music legend’s enduring legacy.
Chief Minister Sarma earlier announced that Garg’s mortal remains will be placed at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Sarusajai, Guwahati, on September 21 from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, allowing fans and well-wishers to bid their final farewell.
“The Government of Assam, with deep sorrow, informs that the mortal remains of Shri Zubeen Garg — an artist larger than life, a cultural icon, filmmaker, and the eternal heartthrob of millions — will be kept at the Sarusajai Stadium for friends, followers, and admirers to pay their last respects,” the state government said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Assam government has declared a three-day state mourning in memory of the singer. During this period, no official entertainment programs, public celebrations, or ceremonial events will be held.
