Assam plunged into grief as thousands of fans paid tribute to legendary singer Zubeen Garg, fondly known as the “King of Humming,” who passed away in Singapore on September 19 following a scuba diving accident.

In Guwahati, emotional fans lit candles and gathered in large numbers to honor the memory of the beloved artist. His mortal remains, brought to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday, are scheduled to arrive in Guwahati by a special flight.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita paid homage to the singer at IGI Airport. CM Sarma later confirmed that Garg’s body would first be taken to his residence, allowing the family private moments, before being placed at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex (Sarusajai Stadium).

The Assam government announced that the remains would be kept at the stadium on Sunday, September 21, from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM for fans and admirers to offer their last respects. “The government, with deep sorrow, informs that the mortal remains of Shri Zubeen Garg, an artist larger than life, will be kept for public homage. This farewell will be remembered for all time,” the CMO said in a statement.

A cabinet meeting will decide the cremation venue. Meanwhile, the state government has declared three days of mourning, during which no official entertainment, ceremonies, or public celebrations will be held.

Across Assam, condolences continue to pour in, while hundreds of fans have gathered outside Garg’s Guwahati residence, waiting for a final glimpse of the icon who left an indelible mark on India’s cultural and musical landscape.
