Six people injured in the cloudburst that struck Tharali in Chamoli district late Friday night were airlifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh, on Saturday for advanced treatment, officials said.

Doctors at the institute are providing specialized care to the injured.

The cloudburst in Toonri Gadera of Tharali tehsil left one person dead and another missing, while several others sustained injuries. Debris from the heavy downpour swept into Tharali market, damaging houses—including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s residence—and burying shops and vehicles.

Rescue operations are being carried out by teams from the NDRF, ITBP, and SSB, with efforts continuing to trace the missing individual.

Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari confirmed that electricity and mobile connectivity in the affected area have been restored. He added, “One person has died, and one is missing. Relief work is progressing at a good pace with adequate deployment of SDRF, NDRF, ITBP, SSB, revenue, and police teams. Relief camps have also been set up with all necessary arrangements.”

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the death of a young woman who was buried under debris and prayed for the safety of the missing person. Taking to X, he said he is in constant touch with the local administration and personally monitoring the relief and rescue efforts.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Dhami also appealed to public representatives to cooperate with district authorities and asked the local MLA to remain on site to oversee relief measures.
