Mumbai Monorail Stalls Midway in Wadala; Passengers Safely Rescued

A monorail in Mumbai’s Wadala area came to a sudden halt on Monday morning due to technical glitches, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) confirmed.

All passengers on board were safely evacuated and transferred to another monorail. No casualties were reported.

Ward Councillor Rajesh Ananda Bhojane of the Republican Party of India (Athawale) urged the state government to address the recurring issue.

“The train heading to Wadala halted, and passengers had to be shifted to another train coming from Chembur. Officials have cited a supply issue. I request the government to fix this problem, which is happening repeatedly,” Bhojane told ANI.

The incident comes weeks after a similar breakdown on August 19 near Mysore Colony station, where a power supply failure stalled a monorail with 582 passengers. That rescue operation, carried out by the BMC, Fire Brigade, and police, lasted over three hours.

At the time, several passengers suffered from suffocation and breathing issues, with two taken to Sion Hospital for treatment before being discharged. Firefighters had deployed snorkel vehicles, while BEST buses ferried stranded commuters to nearby railway stations.

A preliminary investigation into the earlier incident had pointed to overcrowding as a key factor behind the disruption.
