A section of the Gambhira Bridge over the Mahisagar River collapsed on Wednesday morning in Padra, Vadodara district, severing a key connection between Vadodara and Anand districts, officials confirmed.
Emergency response teams from the local administration rushed to the site following the incident. Visuals from the scene showed a large portion of the bridge completely caved in, with debris scattered and parts submerged in the river.
Authorities are yet to confirm the number of casualties or the cause of the collapse, with further details awaited.
Meanwhile, the Congress party shared a video of the collapsed structure on social media platform X, alleging that multiple vehicles fell into the river, leading to fatalities and injuries.
“Several vehicles fell into the river, resulting in the tragic death of some people and injuries to many others. The Congress family expresses deep condolences to the affected families and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured,” the party stated.
In a sharp criticism of the BJP-led Gujarat government, Congress also accused the administration of corruption and mismanagement.
“This accident exposes the rampant corruption carried out in the name of the ‘Gujarat Model’,” the post read.
The incident has sparked political outrage and public concern over infrastructure safety in the state. Investigations into the cause of the collapse are expected to be launched soon.
