At least eight people, including a child and two women, were killed and around 40 others injured when a container truck rammed into a tractor trolley carrying devotees in Bulandshahr district on Sunday, police said.
The accident took place near Ghatal village on National Highway 34 in the Arnia police station area. The devotees were travelling from Kasganj to Gogamedi in Rajasthan to pay obeisance at Jaharpir (Gogaji).
Bulandshahr Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dinesh Kumar Singh confirmed the casualties and said rescue operations were immediately launched. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination.
District Magistrate and other senior officials reached the spot to oversee relief efforts.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
