Delhi Police on Friday announced the arrest of a couple who had been eluding authorities for over six years after defrauding individuals by establishing a phantom company.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Aditya Gautam, indicated that the husband and wife had formed a company that produced incense sticks and camphor. They solicited donations from across the city from thousands of daily wage workers as a registration fee to find work with the company.

Collectively, the pair also duped multiple agents by promising them paid commission fees. They scammed their victims for roughly ₹50 lakh before leaving the area, the DCP revealed.

A report was made with the Economic Offences Wing police station, and the court subsequently issued a proclamation against the suspects.

In the meantime, a police team received information that the duo was hiding in Ludhiana to avoid law enforcement, an officer reported.

The police obtained the lead, and the team raided the facility and apprehended the offenders.

Through extended questioning, the couple confessed to their actions, Gautam reported. The pair was identified as Rakesh Sonkar and Sandeep Devi, both residents of Jharia in the district of Dhanbad.

They are husband and wife and have two children. As disclosed during the investigation, the couple relocated to Delhi from their native place in 2018 to make a living.

Gautam mentioned that a case has been filed against them in accordance with the appropriate provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and that they will now be produced before the relevant court.
