Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced that the production of AK-203 assault rifles will soon commence in Uttar Pradesh, marking a major step towards India’s defence self-reliance.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show 2025 in Greater Noida, PM Modi underlined the Armed Forces’ aspiration to minimise dependence on external suppliers and strengthen domestic capabilities.
“Our armed forces aspire to achieve self-reliance and reduce external dependence. We are committed to building a strong defence infrastructure in India, ensuring every component is proudly Made in India. Uttar Pradesh is playing a crucial role in this effort. Very soon, AK-203 rifles will roll out from a factory established in collaboration with Russia,” the Prime Minister said.
He further highlighted the Uttar Pradesh Defence Corridor, where the production of BrahMos missiles and other weapon systems is already underway, describing it as vital to India’s long-term defence strategy.
The trade show, themed “Ultimate Sourcing Begins Here,” runs from September 25 to 29, showcasing innovation, integration, and internationalisation. It brings together exporters, MSMEs, and entrepreneurs across sectors such as handicrafts, textiles, IT, electronics, leather, and food processing, while also featuring Uttar Pradesh’s art, culture, and cuisine.
PM Modi also used the occasion to defend the GST reforms, stressing that they have increased household savings and simplified taxation.
“Congress and its allies spread lies to hide their pre-2014 failures. We have boosted both incomes and savings. GST reforms will continue, and taxes will be further reduced as the economy strengthens,” he said.
The Congress, however, has accused Modi of making a “U-turn” on GST, recalling that he opposed the model as Gujarat Chief Minister. The BJP countered, claiming the Congress-led UPA era was marked by “only talks and no work.”
