A 44-year-old woman lost her life in a tragic accident on National Highway 66 near Kuloor, Mangaluru, on Tuesday morning, prompting police to register cases against both the lorry driver and officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
The deceased, identified as Madhavi from Kulai, was riding her scooter towards Kuntikana around 8:30 am when she struck a pothole near the Royal Oak building at Kuloor. The impact caused her to fall onto the road.
A lorry driven by Mohammed Farooq, which was trailing her vehicle, ran over her. Madhavi sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot.
Following the incident, police booked the lorry driver for negligent driving. In addition, NHAI officials were charged for failing to maintain the highway and repair potholes, which police said directly contributed to the accident.
The case has been registered at the Mangaluru North Traffic Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Indian Motor Vehicles Act.
