In her presentation of the Union Budget 2025-26, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the launch of a Modified UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme aimed at significantly boosting regional connectivity. The revamped initiative will connect 120 new destinations and enable the transportation of 4 crore additional passengers over the next decade.

The scheme will prioritize the development of helipads and smaller airports, particularly in hilly, aspirational, and northeastern districts, improving accessibility to remote areas. Sitharaman noted, “The Modified UDAN scheme will enhance regional connectivity to 120 new destinations and carry 4 crore additional passengers in the next 10 years.”

To further support aviation growth in Bihar, the Finance Minister announced plans to develop Greenfield airports in the state. These new airports will complement the expansion of Patna Airport and the development of a brownfield airport in Bihta, enhancing Bihar’s air infrastructure to support the region’s economic growth.

“The scheme will also support helipads and smaller airports in hilly, aspirational, and northeast districts. Greenfield airports will be facilitated in Bihar to meet the state’s future needs, alongside expanding Patna airport and developing a brownfield airport in Bihta,” Sitharaman said.

In addition, Sitharaman unveiled financial backing for the Western Kosi Canal Extension, Renovation, and Modernization (ERM) project in Mithilanchal, Bihar. This project aims to provide critical irrigation support to over 50,000 hectares of farmland, benefiting thousands of farmers in the region.

“Financial support will be provided for the Western Kosi Canal ERM project, benefiting farmers cultivating over 50,000 hectares of land in the Mithilanchal region,” Sitharaman stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity and water resource management.

With these initiatives, the Union Budget 2025-26 strengthens the government’s focus on improving regional connectivity, expanding infrastructure, and fostering inclusive economic growth, especially in rural and underserved areas.
