Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reiterated his government’s commitment to nurturing startups in the sports sector, emphasizing their role in making India a global sporting and entrepreneurial powerhouse.
In the 124th edition of his monthly radio program Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi said, “Startups related to sports—whether in management, technology, or manufacturing—will be supported in every possible way. The aim is to turn India into a sporting superpower, with special focus on villages, the poor, and daughters.”
He highlighted the recently launched Khelo Bharat Niti 2025, a policy aimed at mainstreaming sports in schools and colleges while encouraging innovation in indigenous sports equipment production. “Imagine the strength of self-reliance when our youth play using self-made rackets, bats, and balls,” he added.
PM Modi also acknowledged the success of the Startup India initiative, which completes nine years on January 16, 2025. With over 1.59 lakh startups recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), India now ranks as the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem, driven by more than 100 unicorns and expanding into Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
Turning to the textile sector, the Prime Minister called it a living symbol of India’s cultural richness and economic strength. He praised the growing role of women, rural artisans, urban designers, and youth-led startups in revitalizing the textile and apparel industry.
Referring to the legacy of the Swadeshi Movement, PM Modi reminded the nation of the upcoming 10th National Handloom Day on August 7. “The handloom sector reflects the soul of our heritage, and this day serves as a reminder of our commitment to local craftsmanship,” he said.
