PM Modi: ‘Made-in-India’ Semiconductor Chips to Launch by Year-End, Critical Minerals Mission Accelerated

Six semiconductor manufacturing units are being developed under the India Semiconductor Mission, with four already approved at an investment of ₹4,600 crore.

In a landmark Independence Day announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that Made-in-India semiconductor chips will enter the market by the end of 2025, marking a significant leap in India’s journey toward technological self-reliance.

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, PM Modi said the government had moved in “mission mode” to revive a sector that had been stalled for decades. “The concept of semiconductor manufacturing was initiated 50–60 years ago, but it was left stuck in files. While other countries advanced and dominated the sector, India lost precious time. We have broken free from that legacy and are now building our own semiconductor ecosystem,” he stated.

Six semiconductor manufacturing units are being developed under the India Semiconductor Mission, with four already approved at an investment of ₹4,600 crore. These facilities will be located in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab.

The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of critical minerals, vital for industries ranging from energy to defence. He announced the launch of the National Critical Minerals Mission, aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in the exploration, processing, and production of rare earth elements. “Critical minerals, once overlooked, have now become a global priority. For India, self-reliance in this field is essential,” he said.

The mission includes exploration at more than 1,200 sites, incentives worth ₹1,345 crore for rare earth magnet production, and an overall government expenditure of ₹16,300 crore with expected PSU investments of ₹18,000 crore.

By combining semiconductor manufacturing with critical mineral self-reliance, India aims to position itself as a global leader in high-tech supply chains amid shifting geopolitical and economic landscapes.
