India has shipped machinery worth USD 1 million to Suriname as part of its development partnership, aiming to boost the country’s passion fruit (markoesa) industry and enhance bilateral economic cooperation.
The Indian Embassy in Suriname emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “Today, the machines were shipped to Suriname under a donation of $1 million to support and develop the markoesa industry. Development cooperation between India and Suriname continues to grow.”
This move aligns with India’s broader efforts to strengthen its ties with Suriname. On November 21, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Suriname’s President Chandrikapersad ‘Chan’ Santokhi on the sidelines of the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit in Georgetown. The leaders reviewed the progress of their bilateral partnership and explored ways to expand cooperation in defense, trade, agriculture, healthcare, digital initiatives (including UPI), and cultural exchanges.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the discussions, noting that both countries are committed to deepening their economic and diplomatic relations across various sectors.
Prior to this, on November 17, 2024, India sent its first consignment of 425 metric tons of food grains and other edible items to Suriname as part of its Social Welfare Programme. This contribution was aimed at supporting the Government of Suriname’s food security efforts.
With these initiatives, India continues to reinforce its development partnership with Suriname, fostering economic growth and strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations.
