The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has approved a ₹7,000 crore deal for the acquisition of 307 Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) for the Indian Army. This marks a major milestone in India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Make in India initiative.

ATAGS is India’s first indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured 155mm artillery gun, equipped with a 52-calibre barrel capable of striking targets up to 40 km away. With superior firepower, automation, and enhanced lethality, the system will significantly boost the Indian Army’s operational capabilities along its Western and Northern borders.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with Indian private industry, ATAGS boasts over 65% domestically sourced components, including the barrel, breech mechanism, and recoil system. This not only strengthens India’s defence supply chain but also reduces dependency on foreign imports.

Additionally, the indigenous system ensures long-term product support, a robust supply chain, and seamless life-cycle maintenance, reinforcing India’s self-sufficiency in defence technology.

The mass production of ATAGS is expected to generate around 20 lakh man-days of employment, providing a significant boost to the Indian defence manufacturing sector. The project is also expected to position India as a key player in global defence exports, paving the way for future indigenous military sales.

With this approval, India takes a major step towards modernizing its artillery capabilities, ensuring greater firepower, readiness, and strategic advantage for the armed forces.
