Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has said that India holds a “very important role” in helping resolve ongoing global conflicts.
Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, Meloni noted India’s growing influence in international affairs and its potential to contribute to peace efforts.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and PM Meloni held a telephone conversation in which they exchanged views on pressing regional and global issues, including the conflict in Ukraine. Both leaders underlined the importance of early and peaceful solutions to ongoing wars, with PM Modi reiterating India’s support for such efforts.
The two leaders also reviewed progress in the India-Italy Strategic Partnership, highlighting cooperation in defence, security, investment, science and technology, education, counter-terrorism, and people-to-people exchanges. They reaffirmed their commitment to deepen ties under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–29.
Meloni reiterated Italy’s strong backing for an early conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement and expressed support for the success of the AI Impact Summit that India will host in 2026. Both sides also agreed to promote connectivity through the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC).
Extending birthday greetings to PM Modi on September 17, Meloni lauded his leadership, determination, and vision for India’s progress, calling him an “inspiration.”
India and the EU, she added, remain committed to finalising a comprehensive and balanced Free Trade Agreement that benefits businesses and consumers on both sides.
