Nearly 150 people gathered outside a dog shelter in Delhi’s Rohini area on Friday, alleging poor treatment of animals and negligence that reportedly led to several dog deaths, police said on Saturday.

The protestors demanded immediate measures to ensure better care of the animals. In response, authorities allowed a lawyer and two representatives from the demonstrators to enter the shelter for verification.

Police confirmed that the protest remained peaceful, and no legal action was taken against the demonstrators.

The protest came a day after the Supreme Court modified its August 11 order on stray dogs, directing that sterilised and immunised dogs be released back into their original areas, while those infected with rabies or showing aggression be kept separately. The Court also prohibited public feeding of dogs, mandating the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to create designated feeding zones in each ward, and allowing animal lovers to apply for dog adoption.

The Rohini protest follows another incident on August 19, when 15–20 self-described “dog lovers” allegedly disrupted an MCD stray dog-catching drive. Police said the group assaulted staff, freed two captured dogs, and vandalised an MCD vehicle by smashing its windows and stealing official records.

“A case has been registered against the group for obstructing public servants and theft,” Rohini DCP Rajeev Ranjan confirmed.
