US President Donald Trump on Friday announced the appointment of Sergio Gor as the next United States Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs, describing him as a trusted friend and loyal ally.
Vice President JD Vance hailed the decision, calling Gor “a fantastic ambassador” and crediting him for much of the administration’s recent success. “Sergio is a great guy and will make a fantastic ambassador for our country to India. So much of our success over the last few months was due to Sergio’s hard work,” Vance posted on X.
Senior officials from Trump’s team echoed similar praise. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said India was “in safe hands,” while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called Gor an “outstanding pick” with a proven record of delivering results. Kari Lake, a senior advisor, described him as “one of the most loyal soldiers in President Trump’s MAGA Army.”
Announcing the move on Truth Social, Trump highlighted Gor’s role as Director of Presidential Personnel, where he oversaw the appointment of nearly 4,000 officials across federal agencies. “For the most populous region in the world, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my agenda,” Trump said, adding that Gor “will make an incredible Ambassador.”
Responding to the appointment, Gor expressed gratitude to Trump, calling the nomination the “honor of his life” and pledging to represent the United States with pride.
Gor will succeed Eric Garcetti, who served as US Ambassador to India from May 2023 until January 2025. Since Garcetti’s departure, interim Charge d’Affaires Jorgan K. Andrews has been leading the US Embassy in New Delhi.
The appointment comes amid heightened challenges in India-US trade relations, with New Delhi facing steep American tariffs, including penalties on oil imports from Russia.
