US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Friday congratulated Sergio Gor on his appointment as the next US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs, calling him an “outstanding pick” with a proven record of success.

In a post on X, Bessent wrote, “Congratulations to my great friend Sergio Gor on his appointment as Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. As one of President Trump’s most loyal advisors, Sergio is an outstanding pick who has an unprecedented track record of success executing for the President. The American people can be certain that Sergio will be an exceptional steward of America’s interests in the most populous region of the world.”

The announcement of Gor’s new role was made earlier by President Donald Trump, who praised him as a trusted ally and long-time associate. Trump credited Gor with playing a pivotal role as Director of Presidential Personnel, where he oversaw nearly 4,000 appointments across the federal government.

“Sergio is a great friend who has been at my side for many years. He worked on my historic campaigns, published my best-selling books, and ran one of the biggest Super PACs supporting our movement. Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Gor will succeed Eric Garcetti, who served as Ambassador to India from May 2023 to January 2025. Since Garcetti’s departure, Jorgan K. Andrews has been serving as interim Charge d’Affaires in New Delhi.

The appointment comes at a sensitive moment in US–India relations, as New Delhi continues to grapple with 50% trade tariffs, including a 25% penalty on Russian oil imports imposed by Washington.
