US President Donald Trump on Sunday dismissed media reports suggesting he suffered a “major defeat” in his recent talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Alaska Summit.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “The Fake News has been saying for 3 days that I suffered a ‘major defeat’ by allowing President Vladimir Putin of Russia to have a major Summit in the United States. Actually, he would have loved doing the meeting anywhere else but the U.S., and the Fake News knows this. It was a major point of contention!”
Trump argued that had the summit been held outside the US, Democrats and media critics would have attacked him for that as well. He also lashed out at Democrats, claiming they encourage lawlessness in cities under their control. “These people are sick! They even want CRIME in D.C. and other BLUE cities throughout our Country. But don’t worry, I won’t let that happen… our cities will be Secure and Safe, and D.C. will lead the way!” he added.
The remarks come after the August 15 Alaska Summit, a high-stakes meeting aimed at advancing peace efforts in Ukraine. Following the talks, Trump described the meeting with Putin as “very successful,” highlighting that both sides agreed the most effective path forward was pursuing a peace agreement, rather than a temporary ceasefire.
He further said he had spoken by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European leaders, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, all of whom supported efforts for a direct peace deal to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Calling it a “great and very successful day in Alaska”, Trump emphasised that the summit had brought all parties closer to the goal of ending the war.
