Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), asserting that if the voter list contains discrepancies, the entire Lok Sabha and Union Government should be dissolved — as the same electoral roll was used to elect the Prime Minister and Union ministers.
Banerjee accused the ECI of evading questions on alleged irregularities, including cases where voters share the same EPIC number in both Gujarat and West Bengal. He alleged that the commission was “scared” and avoiding accountability.
Speaking to reporters, he said, “The way Delhi Police treated opposition MPs, including several women MPs protesting peacefully, shows the Election Commission is frightened. If you have answers, explain how voters in Gujarat and Bengal can have the same EPIC number or how one person’s name appears at multiple polling stations.”
Challenging the ECI’s stance, Banerjee argued, “If you admit there’s an error in the voter list, then remember this same list elected the Prime Minister, 240 BJP MPs, and senior Union ministers just a year ago. If there’s irregularity, dissolve the entire Lok Sabha. The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) should cover the whole country, not just Bengal.”
His remarks came amid protests by the INDIA bloc in Parliament over the SIR issue, where Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge joined other opposition MPs, many wearing white T-shirts with the slogan ‘124 Not Out’.
