Trinamool Congress MP Mitali Bagh fainted on Sunday during the Opposition’s protest march to the Election Commission (EC) over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in poll-bound Bihar and alleged “voter fraud” in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and other MPs quickly came to her aid, escorting her to the hospital for treatment.

Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, and several INDIA bloc MPs were detained by Delhi Police while marching towards the EC office. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, TMC MP Sagarika Ghose, and other leaders were also among those detained and taken to Parliament Street police station.

Rahul Gandhi asserted that the protest was “not a political fight, but a fight to save the Constitution,” demanding a clean and accurate voters list. Priyanka Gandhi accused the government of acting out of fear, saying, “Dare hue hai. Sarkaar kaayar hai” (They are afraid; the government is cowardly).

The protest saw dramatic moments, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav climbing over barricades after police blocked the march. “They are using the police to stop us,” he said, while NCP MP Supriya Sule emphasised that the demonstration was peaceful.

Senior leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, also joined the rally, which began from Parliament’s Makar Dwar and was halted before reaching Nirvachan Sadan. The Delhi Police said no prior permission was taken for the march.

Responding to the protest, BJP leader and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accused the Congress of misleading the public and creating unrest, calling their allegations part of a “well-thought-out strategy to create a state of anarchy.”
