Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned till Wednesday, July 23, following continuous uproar by Opposition parties over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and other key national issues. The disruptions marked the second consecutive day of stalled proceedings in the ongoing Monsoon Session.

The Lok Sabha was first adjourned till noon shortly after it convened at 11 am, and then again till 2 pm amid loud protests. Ultimately, the House was adjourned for the day. The Rajya Sabha faced similar disruptions and was also adjourned till 11 am tomorrow.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised the Opposition for blocking parliamentary functioning despite the government’s willingness to hold discussions. “They are demanding a discussion, and we are ready for it. Then why create a ruckus and waste public money? This double standard is unacceptable,” Rijiju said.

Presiding over the Lok Sabha, BJP MP Jagdambika Pal urged Opposition members to refrain from using placards and instead submit proposals or resolutions for formal consideration. “You can submit your proposals to the Business Advisory Committee. The Speaker will allot time and the government will respond,” he advised.

In Rajya Sabha too, Opposition MPs raised slogans and demanded a debate on the Election Commission’s ongoing electoral roll revision in Bihar. The INDIA bloc has raised concerns about alleged irregularities and disenfranchisement due to the exclusion of Aadhaar and PAN cards as valid documents for voter verification.

Outside Parliament, senior leaders including Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav led a symbolic protest at Makar Dwar, condemning the Bihar SIR exercise as “undemocratic” and calling it a “theft of voting rights.”

The Opposition is also pressing for discussions on the recent Pahalgam terror attack and India’s military response through Operation Sindoor, which the government has agreed to take up in the session.

With tensions high, the Monsoon Session continues to witness confrontation between the treasury and opposition benches, raising concerns over legislative productivity in the days ahead.
