BJP leader Amit Malviya on Friday sharply criticised the Congress party for what he termed as a “shameless flip-flop” regarding its stance on linking Aadhaar with Voter ID.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Malviya highlighted what he called Congress’s “hypocrisy,” contrasting its opposition in 2021 to Aadhaar-Voter ID linkage with its current support for the same.
“2021: Modi government proposes voluntary linking of Voter ID with Aadhaar. Congress protests inside Parliament with placards screaming: ‘Aadhaar is just for targeted delivery of benefits. It can’t be linked with Voter ID!’” he wrote.
“2025: Congress now wants Aadhaar to verify Voter ID. Same Aadhaar. Same Voter ID. Just exposed hypocrisy. Anything for votes—even if it means shameless flip-flops!” the post added.
Malviya’s criticism comes amid a growing political debate over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls being undertaken in Bihar by the Election Commission. The revision aims to update the voter list ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections scheduled for November.
The Congress and other opposition parties have raised concerns over the SIR exercise, alleging that the tight timelines and stringent documentation requirements—such as Aadhaar linkage—could disenfranchise legitimate voters.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court allowed the Election Commission to proceed with the revision exercise but acknowledged concerns regarding the short timeline. The court also noted that Aadhaar could be permitted as one of the documents for voter identity verification. It scheduled the next hearing in the case for July 28, directing the Election Commission to submit its affidavit within a week.
