The prequel explores the origins of the divine saga that captivated audiences in Kantara, blending folklore, spirituality, and action in a uniquely rooted cinematic experience. Rishab Shetty, who wrote, directed, and starred in the original film, has undergone intensive training in Kalaripayattu for this new chapter, as seen in a recent behind-the-scenes post on his Instagram.

Shetty, who won the National Award for Best Actor for his performance in Kantara, expressed his gratitude to his team and fans. “I am just the face of the film. The credit goes to the entire team—DOP, technicians, the production house. This recognition belongs to the people of Karnataka,” he said earlier.

The original Kantara, set in the fictional Dakshina Kannada village, followed the tale of a Kambala champion’s spiritual clash with a forest officer, and was hailed for its gripping storytelling and rooted visuals. It also won the National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

With Kantara: Chapter 1, the legend returns—this time going deeper into the forest, tradition, and the soul of its mythology.
