Parts of Delhi witnessed early morning showers on Sunday, bringing much-needed relief from the heat, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast light to moderate rain with thunderstorms over the next two days.
According to the IMD, the skies will remain generally cloudy across the national capital, with south-westerly winds at speeds up to 15 kmph. Temperatures have stayed consistent, with maximums ranging between 36-37°C and minimums between 25-29°C, which are near normal for this time of year.
The IMD further noted that the monsoon trough currently extends from Suratgarh through Delhi and into the Bay of Bengal, with an upper air cyclonic circulation located over Himachal Pradesh and adjoining Punjab at 1.5 km above sea level.
Meanwhile, in Himachal Pradesh, the impact of the monsoon has been devastating. The cumulative death toll since June 20 has reached 75, including 45 rain-related fatalities and 30 accidental deaths caused by road mishaps, electrocutions, and gas explosions, as per data from the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC).
The seasonal report covering June 20 to July 4 also revealed:
- 288 injuries due to weather-triggered events
- Estimated infrastructure and property damage of ₹541.09 crore
- Destruction of over 10,000 poultry birds and 168 cattle, affecting rural livelihoods
- Severe damage to horticultural and agricultural land, with assessments ongoing
The highest accidental death tolls were reported from Chamba (6) and Kullu (3) districts.
As monsoon conditions continue across northern India, authorities remain on high alert for further rainfall-related disruptions.
