Amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, India on Friday expressed deep concern over the situation and called on both nations to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic dialogue to avoid further deterioration.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India said it is “closely monitoring the evolving situation, including reports related to attacks on nuclear sites.”
“We are deeply concerned at the recent developments between Iran and Israel,” the MEA said, adding, “India urges both sides to avoid any escalatory steps. Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised to work towards a de-escalation of the situation and resolving underlying issues.”
India also reiterated its friendly ties with both countries and expressed willingness to provide any possible support to help de-escalate the situation.
“India enjoys close and friendly relations with both countries and stands ready to extend all possible support,” the MEA noted.
Amid the rising tensions, the Indian government also issued an advisory for its nationals living in both Iran and Israel, urging them to stay cautious, remain safe, and follow local security guidelines.
“Our Missions in both countries are in contact with the Indian community,” the MEA said.
The statement comes on the heels of Israel’s reported preemptive airstrikes on Iran, aimed at nuclear and military installations. According to Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz, the action was necessary due to the growing threat posed by Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
As reported by The Times of Israel, Katz announced the imposition of a nationwide emergency and warned that a retaliatory attack from Iran, possibly involving heavy missiles or drones, could occur soon.
“Following the State of Israel’s preemptive strike against Iran, a missile and drone attack… is expected in the immediate future,” Katz said.
He added that a “special state of emergency” had been declared, and urged citizens to obey Home Front Command instructions and take shelter in protected areas.
Sirens were sounded across the country as a precaution, not in response to an actual attack, clarified Tzvika Tessler of Israel’s Home Front Command.
“This is to prepare Israelis for a new situation,” he said, warning of a “significant attack from the east” in the hours ahead.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed it had launched a large-scale aerial operation targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities and related military infrastructure, under Operation Nation of Lions.
According to IDF officials, dozens of Iranian sites have been struck, and they cited Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile as posing an “imminent threat,” claiming it could be weaponised within days.
The ongoing crisis has triggered international concern, with multiple countries, including India, emphasizing the importance of restraint and diplomacy to prevent a broader regional conflict.
