The Karnataka government is actively considering merging Tumakuru district with Bengaluru city, according to State Home Minister G Parameshwara. The minister revealed that a proposal has already been submitted to transform Tumakuru into “Bengaluru North district.”
Speaking to the media, Parameshwara said the move is aimed at accommodating the rapid growth of Bengaluru, which is steadily extending toward nearby regions including Tumakuru, Ramanagara, Kolar, and Chikkaballapur.
“Bengaluru city has already expanded beyond Nelamangala, and Tumakuru is just 30 km away. Integrating it as part of Bengaluru North would be easier to identify and promote on a global scale,” he explained.
The minister noted that this transition could bring better recognition and development to the region. A proposal to include 14 gram panchayats under the jurisdiction of the Mahanagara Palike is also in the works, indicating plans to extend Tumakuru’s urban governance.
Parameshwara also praised Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for a similar initiative involving Ramanagara, which has been merged into the Bengaluru South district. “As soon as it is called Bengaluru South, its profile changes. We will consider a similar strategy for Tumakuru,” he said.
In addition, Parameshwara mentioned his request to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for permission to build a ‘Welcome’ arch on the National Highway at Tumakuru. The Rs 5 crore project will be funded under the Smart City initiative.
