In a major diplomatic development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” following heightened tensions and cross-border hostilities between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Sharing the announcement via his social media platform Truth Social, President Trump credited U.S. mediation for brokering the breakthrough. “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,” Trump posted. “Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.”
The announcement comes after days of escalating conflict, including military strikes and retaliatory actions on both sides of the border. Trump commended the leadership of both nations for opting for peace, suggesting that diplomacy had triumphed over continued confrontation.
Backing Trump’s statement, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the agreement, stating, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also affirmed ongoing U.S. involvement in defusing the crisis. She revealed that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser had been actively engaging with Indian and Pakistani officials to secure a peaceful resolution. “The President wants to see this de-escalate as quickly as possible,” Leavitt stated, noting that Rubio had been in constant communication with the leaders of both nations.
“This is a longstanding conflict,” Leavitt added. “But President Trump has built good relationships with both countries’ leaders and has made de-escalation a top priority.”
Earlier on Saturday, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had characterized Pakistan’s actions as “escalatory” and “provocative,” presenting evidence of aggression and disinformation campaigns. Despite the ceasefire, India has maintained a firm stance on defending its sovereignty and exposing misinformation from across the border.
While the ceasefire marks a significant diplomatic achievement, the situation remains delicate, and observers are watching closely to see if the truce holds in the coming days.
