Secretary General of the Muslim World League, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Jeddah on Tuesday, where he strongly condemned the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. Offering his deepest condolences for the innocent lives lost, Al-Issa expressed solidarity with India during the tragic time.

The meeting took place during PM Modi’s State Visit to Saudi Arabia, which he later cut short in response to the terror incident. According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Prime Minister Modi appreciated the Muslim World League’s efforts in promoting moderation, tolerance, and social cohesion globally.

PM Modi also praised the League’s clear stance against extremism, violence, and terrorism. He recalled his previous meeting with Al-Issa in July 2023 in New Delhi, reiterating India’s support for the League’s efforts to advance harmony among communities.

The Prime Minister highlighted India’s inclusive ethos, referring to the country’s ancient philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the belief that the world is one family. “India’s incredible diversity, encompassing various cultures, languages, religions, and ethnicities, is a source of strength,” PM Modi said, as per the MEA.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and other senior officials were present at the meeting.

Following their interaction, Sheikh Al-Issa took to X (formerly Twitter) and shared that they discussed holding a “Diversity and Harmony Summit” in India to further promote global unity and peaceful coexistence.

“Today, in Jeddah, I met with the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi. The meeting discussed topics of common interest, and we also discussed the idea of holding a Diversity and Harmony Summit in India,” he posted.

PM Modi had arrived in Jeddah earlier on Tuesday and was welcomed with a ceremonial reception by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. During the visit, the two leaders co-chaired the second India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council (SPC) and discussed strengthening ties across multiple sectors.

However, in light of the Pahalgam terror attack, the Prime Minister decided to return to India ahead of schedule, skipping an official dinner and departing Jeddah early Wednesday morning.
