BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the West Bengal government, alleging that the demographic profile of all bordering areas in the state has been significantly altered under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regime.

Speaking to ANI, Bhattacharya claimed that the TMC was enabling the influx of Rohingyas and Bangladeshi immigrants into the state, accusing the party of playing “vote bank politics” and allowing the spread of “jihadi ideas.” He asserted that individuals who had once left India, calling it “napaak,” were now being welcomed back by the ruling party.

“Demography of all bordering areas has been changed. TMC is welcoming those who once rejected India. With Bangladeshi immigrants and Rohingyas entering, extremist ideas have begun to take root. A TMC minister is openly validating the situation, stating that Hindus are only migrating within the state,” said Bhattacharya.

Referring to the 1946 Calcutta killings, the BJP MP said the Mamata Banerjee government has taken the state back to an era of communal strife. “Where we are sitting right now, this place was covered in blood back in 1946. Mamata Banerjee’s governance is reminding us of those dark times,” he added.

The remarks come in the wake of recent violence in Murshidabad, triggered by protests against the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act. The protests turned violent, resulting in at least three deaths, multiple injuries, and extensive property damage.

The BJP has also criticised TMC MP Bapi Halder for allegedly making inflammatory remarks during the protests. The party accused the ruling Trinamool of supporting unrest to consolidate its voter base.

Meanwhile, state authorities have urged for calm. Additional Director General (ADG) of South Bengal Police, Supratim Sarkar, said the situation in Murshidabad is under control with CRPF, state police, and joint forces deployed. “We urge citizens to ignore rumours and contact our control room for assistance,” he stated.
