BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi on Monday strongly criticised state governments opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, alleging that their actions reflect an “utter contempt for the Constitution.” His remarks came in the wake of protests in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly and opposition from states like Tamil Nadu against the newly passed legislation.

Speaking to the media, Trivedi said, “The Waqf Bill has been passed after following the constitutionally mandated process. Yet, some state governments are opposing it. This clearly indicates that they hold the Constitution in contempt.”

He further asserted that no state government is constitutionally allowed to oppose a law passed by Parliament, adding, “The scenes witnessed in the J&K Assembly – tearing apart the Bill symbolically – are a threat to constitutional order.”

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly descended into chaos after members of the National Conference (NC) and its allies protested the Speaker’s refusal to allow a discussion on the Bill through an adjournment motion, citing the matter as sub judice.

Meanwhile, Congress MLA Irfan Hafeez Lone criticised the Centre for what he described as an attack on secularism and federalism, saying, “This Act violates the Constitution, democracy, and the rule of law.”

President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 on April 5, following its passage in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha with considerable debate. The Bill aims to modernize and streamline the management of waqf properties, enhance transparency in registrations and surveys, and incorporate technology to improve governance.

Despite its stated objectives, the Bill has drawn significant criticism from several political and religious groups who fear it may dilute minority rights and disrupt existing waqf structures. The political and legal tussle surrounding the Bill underscores the deepening divide between the Centre and several state governments over religious and administrative autonomy.
