A delegation of Supreme Court judges visited Imphal, Manipur, on Sunday to attend the duodecennial celebrations and inaugurate several judicial infrastructure projects.
Justice B.R. Gavai, a Supreme Court judge, led the delegation and officially inaugurated the Secretariat of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur, along with new court buildings and legal aid projects. The event saw judges interacting with officials and discussing legal developments in the state.
On Saturday, a five-member Supreme Court Judges’ delegation arrived in Manipur. The team, comprising Justices B.R. Gavai, Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, M.M. Sundresh, K.V. Viswanathan, and N. Kotishwar, participated in various legal and humanitarian initiatives.
As part of their visit, the delegation visited a relief camp in Churachandpur, where they assessed the conditions of displaced individuals. Justice Gavai, who also serves as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), launched legal aid clinics and medical camps in districts such as Imphal East, Imphal West, and Ukhrul.
During the inauguration, Justice Gavai emphasized the importance of legal aid and healthcare access, stating:
“For justice to prevail, access to healthcare is equally important. My team and I assure you that we stand with you. It is our collective responsibility to work for the well-being of society. The entire nation is committed to ensuring these issues are resolved.”
Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2024, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The state has witnessed ongoing ethnic violence since May 3, 2023, when tensions between Meitei Hindus and Kuki Christians escalated. The Central Government deployed paramilitary forces to control the unrest.
The Supreme Court delegation’s visit highlights the judiciary’s commitment to legal reforms and humanitarian aid, ensuring that justice remains accessible even in conflict-affected regions.
