BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia on Monday expressed disappointment over Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed’s remarks about Team India captain Rohit Sharma’s fitness, calling it “unfortunate” that such comments came from someone in a responsible position.

Shama Mohamed sparked outrage with a now-deleted post on X, where she called Rohit Sharma “fat” and the country’s “most unimpressive captain” after his dismissal for 15 runs off 17 balls in India’s match against New Zealand for the Champions Trophy.

Defending her statement, Mohamed insisted her tweet was a “generic” observation about a sportsperson’s fitness and not body-shaming. “It’s a democracy — what’s wrong in saying it?” she argued.

The BJP strongly criticized her remarks, with Shehzad Poonawalla taking a dig at the Congress party’s electoral record, saying, “Those who have lost 90 elections under Rahul Gandhi’s captaincy are calling Rohit Sharma’s captaincy unimpressive!”

Congress MP Rajani Patil distanced the party from Mohamed’s comments, stating that the Congress would seek a response from her, emphasizing that body-shaming anyone — especially a national sportsperson — was unacceptable.

On the field, Rohit Sharma led India to a 44-run victory against New Zealand in Dubai, securing the top spot in Group A and advancing to the semifinals with three consecutive wins.
