Upon his arrival in Marseille, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of the Indian Consulate in the city, highlighting its role in strengthening the “people-to-people” connections between India and France. PM Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron will inaugurate the consulate, which will become India’s second diplomatic mission in France, following the embassy in Paris.

Marseille, with its strategic location on the Mediterranean coast, is a key gateway for trade between India and France. It is also an important entry point for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

In his statement, PM Modi said, “President Macron and I recently arrived in Marseille. This visit will include key initiatives to enhance the relationship between India and France. The Indian Consulate being inaugurated here will help strengthen people-to-people ties. I will also pay tribute to the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives as martyrs in the First and Second World Wars.”

Additionally, PM Modi and President Macron will visit the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, a significant international collaboration in nuclear fusion research.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi paid tribute to Marseille’s historical significance in India’s freedom struggle, recalling the “courageous escape” attempt of Veer Savarkar. He also expressed his gratitude to the French activists who supported Savarkar during this challenging time.

On X, he shared, “Landed in Marseille. This city holds special significance in India’s freedom quest. It was here that the great Veer Savarkar attempted his courageous escape. I also want to thank the people of Marseille and the French activists who fought to prevent his extradition to British custody. Veer Savarkar’s bravery continues to inspire generations!”

Meanwhile, PM Modi addressed the India-France CEOs Forum in Paris, underscoring the forum’s role in strengthening economic ties and fostering innovation. On X, he wrote, “The India-France CEO Forum plays a key role in strengthening economic ties and fostering innovation. It is heartening to see business leaders from both nations collaborate, creating new opportunities across key sectors. This drives growth, investment, and secures a better future for generations to come.”

At the forum, PM Modi added, “This is more than just a business event—it’s a gathering of the brightest minds from India and France. You are embracing the values of innovation, collaboration, and progress, driving positive change with purpose. Beyond business connections, you are reinforcing the strategic partnership between our nations.”

He also highlighted the deep trust and shared values between India and France, noting that “India and France are not just connected by democratic values, but also by a deep trust, a commitment to innovation, and a shared mission to serve our people. Our relationship goes beyond our two countries, as we work together to tackle global challenges.”

In Paris, PM Modi co-chaired the AI Action Summit with President Macron. The week-long summit concluded with a high-level segment attended by global leaders, policymakers, and industry experts.
