Hamas is set to release three Israeli hostages and five Thai nationals on Thursday, as part of a ceasefire arrangement, according to the Times of Israel. The hostages, whose names were passed to mediators Egypt and Qatar, include Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldier Agam Berger (20), civilians Arbek Yehoud (29), and Gadi Moshe Mozes (80).
Israeli officials confirmed the release of five Thai nationals, although their names were not disclosed. Currently, there are eight Thai hostages in Gaza, along with one from Nepal and one from Tanzania. However, Israel has confirmed the deaths of two Thai nationals and one Tanzanian in the conflict.
As part of the ceasefire deal, Israel will release 110 Palestinian security prisoners—30 for each civilian hostages, and 50 for Berger, including 30 individuals convicted of terrorism and serving life sentences.
The previous week saw the return of four hostages to Israel. These soldiers, members of the IDF’s surveillance unit, were freed after being held by Hamas following the October 7, 2023, attack at the Nahal Oz post. Israeli special forces escorted them out of Gaza, after they were handed over to the Red Cross.
Footage from Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square captured the joyous reception as the hostages—Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Liri Albag—were returned to Israel. The crowd cheered and applauded as the hostages were seen in early photos and reports indicated they had been handed over to the IDF. Many supporters wore bright yellow shirts, symbolizing solidarity with the hostages, and carried photos of those returning home.
The October 7, 2023, Hamas assault on southern Israel killed over 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and resulted in the abduction of more than 200 others. In response, Israel’s counteroffensive in Gaza has led to the deaths of over 46,000 Palestinians. In November 2023, a week-long ceasefire saw the release of over 100 hostages.
