Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit, contesting from the New Delhi assembly constituency, criticized Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal over his recent allegation that the BJP-ruled Haryana government “poisoned” the Yamuna water. Dikshit accused Kejriwal of spreading falsehoods.
Speaking to ANI, Dikshit expressed surprise that neither Haryana Police nor Delhi Police had taken action against Kejriwal for his serious claim. “This is a serious allegation. Arvind Kejriwal should explain what kind of poison was in the water. He is lying, and yet he’s allowed to roam free. If an ordinary person made such an accusation, they’d be arrested the next day. I’m surprised that Haryana Police or Delhi Police haven’t acted. Where is the Election Commission?” Dikshit said.
He further suggested that either AAP and the BJP have an internal alliance or institutions aren’t taking such matters seriously, even if they cause public panic. “A case was filed against a person who made a bomb threat to schools in Delhi. If Kejriwal’s claims are true, he should provide evidence. If not, a case should be registered against him,” he added.
Dikshit’s comments came after Kejriwal’s allegations against the Haryana government, claiming they had “poisoned” the Yamuna water supplied to Delhi in an attempt to cause mass casualties and shift the blame onto AAP. “The BJP’s Haryana government has poisoned the water in Yamuna. If this water had entered Delhi’s drinking supply, many people would have died. It could have caused mass genocide,” Kejriwal stated at a press conference, later acknowledging that the Delhi Jal Board had prevented the poisoned water from mixing with the drinking supply.
Kejriwal’s remarks sparked strong reactions from the BJP, with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini warning of a defamation lawsuit against Kejriwal. “Kejriwal should immediately apologize to the people of Haryana and Delhi for these baseless and offensive statements. If not, we will file a defamation suit,” Saini said.
Sandeep Dikshit is set to face Arvind Kejriwal in the February 5 Delhi assembly elections.
