Amid a forecast of dangerously low temperatures across the United States, President-elect Donald Trump has announced changes to his January 20 inauguration plans. All official events, including the swearing-in ceremony and speeches, will now be held inside the US Capitol Rotunda to ensure the safety of attendees. Trump emphasized that the decision was made out of an obligation to protect the public.

The US Capitol Rotunda, a grand circular room beneath the Capitol dome, has served as a historic venue for past events, including Ronald Reagan’s 1985 inauguration, which was also moved indoors due to severe weather.

Trump addressed supporters on the social media platform Truth Social, writing: “January 20th cannot come fast enough! … It is my obligation to protect the people of our country. The weather forecast for Washington, DC, shows record-low temperatures with an Arctic blast sweeping the nation. I don’t want to see anyone hurt or injured, including the tens of thousands of law enforcement, first responders, K9 units, horses, and hundreds of thousands of supporters who will be outside for hours. If you decide to come, dress warmly!”

He further explained that the ceremony inside the Rotunda would still be a “beautiful experience” for attendees and viewers at home, highlighting the safety benefits of the indoor venue.

The inauguration programme will otherwise remain largely unchanged. Trump confirmed that live viewing of the event and the Presidential Parade will take place at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, with additional celebrations planned.

“We will open Capital One Arena on Monday for live viewing of this historic event and host the Presidential Parade. I will join the crowd at Capital One after my swearing-in,” Trump shared.

The Victory Rally is scheduled for Sunday, January 19, at 3 PM, with doors opening at 1 PM. The day will also feature three Inaugural Balls on Monday evening, as initially planned.

On January 20, Trump will be sworn in as the forty-seventh President of the United States, marking his return to the White House after serving as the forty-fifth President from 2017 to 2021. Despite the weather-related adjustments, Trump promised supporters a memorable and historic occasion.
