President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the Indian Army’s vital role in safeguarding the nation, combating terrorism, and fostering peace and prosperity. Her message came on the occasion of the 77th Army Day, observed annually on January 15.
In her address to the Indian Army, President Murmu said, “I extend my warm felicitations to the Indian Army on the occasion of Army Day 2025.” She lauded the Army’s unwavering commitment to national security, emphasizing its extraordinary courage and professionalism in defending India’s borders.
“The Indian Army plays a pivotal role in ensuring national security. Our soldiers create a peaceful environment that fosters progress and prosperity for the nation. The courageous army personnel have consistently displayed exceptional bravery and professionalism. They have been instrumental in anti-terrorism operations and have significantly contributed to containing terrorism,” the President remarked.
She also paid tribute to the sacrifices of soldiers, stating, “A grateful nation pays homage to the brave hearts who laid down their lives in service of the country. The nation is forever indebted to them and their families. I wish the Indian Army continued success in its endeavors and extend my best wishes to its gallant soldiers, veterans, and their families.”
Army Day is celebrated every year to mark the historic moment in 1949 when General (later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa took over command of the Indian Army from General Francis Roy Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief, becoming the first Indian Commander-in-Chief post-independence.
As part of the Army Day celebrations, the Indian Army showcased its technological advancements, highlighting its commitment to operational excellence and self-reliance. In line with the Ministry of Defence’s declaration of 2025 as the “Year of Reforms,” the Indian Army continues its “Decade of Transformation” (2023-2032), aimed at redefining India’s defence capabilities.
The Army’s focus on innovation was evident in its decision to extend the 2023 “Year of Technology Absorption” initiative for another year. This initiative underscores the Army’s efforts to address unique operational challenges across diverse terrains, including the icy Himalayas, the deserts of Rajasthan, and the dense jungles of the Northeast, by fostering in-house technological advancements.
President Murmu’s message and the Army’s ongoing initiatives reflect the nation’s gratitude and its commitment to empowering its armed forces as they continue to safeguard India’s sovereignty and security.
