At the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) in Bhubaneswar, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the transformative role of India’s youth in driving global change.
Reflecting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s influence on the younger generation, Jaishankar shared a memorable observation by Indian badminton star P.V. Sindhu. He noted that PM Modi’s attitude has shifted the nation from a “chalta hai” (it’s fine) mentality to a “hoga kaise nahi” (how can it not happen) spirit.
Jaishankar stressed that young people today are spearheading advancements in sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), electric vehicles (EVs), startups, and even sports like cricket and chess. He also mentioned that India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation, known as “Viksit Bharat” in the Amrit Kaal, has only just begun. He added that while development is complex, it is made easier when the nation believes that nothing is impossible.
The Minister also urged the Indian diaspora to help promote India as a premier tourist destination. He encouraged young members of the Indian community abroad to bring their friends from other countries to explore India’s rich cultural and historical heritage. “This will surely become a lifelong habit for them,” he said.
On a personal note, Jaishankar explained the choice to depart from tradition by selecting a guest of honor from the media and business sectors, rather than from the political realm. “Today’s young Indians are excelling in various fields, and it is crucial to recognize this,” he remarked.
Jaishankar also highlighted Odisha’s unique cultural, religious, and archaeological significance, suggesting that it provides an ideal backdrop for discussions at the PBD. The state offers an opportunity to experience much of the heritage and traditions central to India’s identity as a civilizational society.
The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, held from January 8 to 10 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, brings together over 50 countries to celebrate the Indian diaspora. The theme of this year’s event is “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat.” Prime Minister Modi will officially inaugurate the convention on January 9, underscoring the growing role of India’s global presence and its diaspora in shaping the nation’s future.
