Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 75th birthday, crediting him with fulfilling a long-pending “constitutional promise” by implementing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and transforming India’s economic, social, and global standing.

In an interview with News 18, Shah said PM Modi always puts the nation above everything else and has steered India towards greater pride and prosperity.

Highlighting GST as a landmark reform, Shah recalled that despite decades of discussion under Congress governments, it was Modi who implemented it by guaranteeing states’ revenue security. “He made a constitutional promise and fulfilled it. Almost all states will receive their dues by November,” Shah noted.

He accused Congress of failing to build consensus or offer guarantees to states. “If GST was their idea, why did they never implement it?” he asked.

The Home Minister also said people now have greater trust in governance, as higher tax revenues are being translated into welfare benefits.

On PM Modi’s decade-long leadership, Shah said, “He has lifted India’s pride, brought 25 crore people out of poverty, given toilets, electricity, clean water, and free food grains to crores, and modernised the armed forces.” He compared Modi’s achievements to those of past prime ministers, emphasising that he has raised living standards for millions and elevated India from the 11th to the 4th largest economy in the world.

Discussing challenges, Shah called the COVID-19 pandemic the toughest test for Modi’s leadership. He credited initiatives like the Janata Curfew and symbolic gestures of solidarity for uniting the nation in the fight against the virus.

On national security, Shah reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance policy against terrorism, citing surgical strikes and operations like Sindoor and Mahadev as proof of India’s decisive response.

Concluding, Shah said PM Modi has awakened a collective resolve in 140 crore Indians to achieve the goal of making India a great nation by 2047.
