Right-wing commentator and conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot in the neck on Wednesday while addressing a gathering at Utah Valley University, according to The New York Times.

A university spokesperson said the incident occurred about 20 minutes into Kirk’s presentation when gunfire was heard from a nearby building. The university later confirmed that a single shot was fired toward the visiting speaker, and one suspect has been taken into custody.

Kirk was the only person injured in the attack. Videos circulating on social media showed chaos at the scene, with students fleeing and Kirk collapsing as blood appeared on his neck. He was seated under a tent bearing the slogan “The American Comeback” at the time of the shooting.

The FBI’s Utah office confirmed that agents are responding to the scene. FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X that the bureau is monitoring the situation closely and pledged full support for the ongoing response and investigation.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox said he was being briefed by law enforcement, calling the attack “violence directed at Charlie Kirk” and promising accountability for those responsible. “Violence has no place in our public life,” Cox said in a post on X.

Prominent Republican lawmakers also condemned the shooting. Senator Lindsey Graham called it a “sick and despicable attack,” while Senators Ted Cruz and Katie Britt expressed solidarity and offered prayers for Kirk’s recovery.

At least three videos posted online show the moment Kirk was struck during his speech, fueling shock and condemnation across political circles.
