Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday released a commemorative coin and centenary memorial stamp in honour of Professor MS Swaminathan, marking the birth centenary of the legendary agricultural scientist and father of India’s Green Revolution.

The release was part of the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference, inaugurated by the Prime Minister, which aims to advance the visionary’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and food security.

In a significant tribute to his legacy, the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) in collaboration with the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) has instituted the MS Swaminathan Award for Food and Peace.

Prime Minister Modi also presented the inaugural award during the event. The award will annually honour individuals from developing countries who have made remarkable contributions to food security, climate justice, equity, and peace, whether through scientific innovation, policy-making, grassroots activism, or local capacity building.

Professor MS Swaminathan is widely credited with pioneering the Green Revolution in India, transforming the nation from a food-deficient country into a self-sufficient agricultural powerhouse. His centenary is being celebrated with renewed focus on his vision for a hunger-free, sustainable, and inclusive future.
