PM Modi Meets Maldives Speaker and Former President Nasheed, Reaffirms Strong Bilateral Ties

On the second day of his visit to the Maldives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla and former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, further strengthening India’s outreach to key leaders of the island nation.

PM Modi welcomed the formation of the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group in the 20th Majlis, calling it a positive step for bolstering democratic and diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Taking to X, PM Modi said, “Met Mr. Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Speaker of the People’s Majlis. Talked about the deep-rooted India-Maldives friendship, including the close relationship between our respective Parliaments… India remains committed to supporting capacity building in the Maldives.”

In his meeting with former President Nasheed, PM Modi acknowledged his consistent support for stronger India-Maldives ties and underlined the Maldives’ significance in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and Mahasagar vision.

“Met the former President of Maldives, Mr. Mohamed Nasheed. He has always been a strong advocate of a deeper India-Maldives friendship,” PM Modi posted.

Earlier, the Prime Minister also met Maldivian Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, with whom he discussed cooperation in infrastructure, energy, technology, and climate change.

PM Modi is in the Maldives at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu as the Guest of Honour for the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations.

Speaking at a banquet on Friday, PM Modi emphasized the cultural and strategic closeness between the two countries, stating that the Maldives holds a special place in India’s diplomatic and regional vision.

In a show of growing cooperation, India and the Maldives signed eight agreements on Friday, covering key sectors such as fisheries, digital payments (UPI), debt restructuring, and a new Line of Credit, further deepening bilateral economic and strategic engagement.
