Police in Surrey, Canada, have launched an investigation after multiple gunshots were fired at ‘Kap’s Cafe’, a newly opened restaurant owned by popular Indian comedian Kapil Sharma. The incident occurred at around 1:50 am (local time) on Thursday, according to the Surrey Police Service.

Authorities confirmed that staff members were inside the cafe during the shooting, but fortunately, no one was injured. At least ten bullet holes were visible on the cafe’s window, and another window pane was shattered.

Kap’s Cafe, which had just opened earlier this week, is located in a mixed-use building that includes ground-level retail units and residential apartments above. A multi-faith centre and two other unopened businesses also occupy the ground floor.

Police cordoned off the area, including a nearby daycare in the Newton neighbourhood, as officers collected evidence from the scene. Children were seen playing nearby while the investigation was underway.

Surrey Police spokesperson Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton acknowledged reports circulating in Indian media that a Khalistani separatist may have claimed responsibility. However, he clarified that the investigation is still in its early stages and no suspects have been identified.

The Surrey Police Service said they are exploring possible links to other incidents and working to establish a motive. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses to piece together the sequence of events.

Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the Surrey Police at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
