On the occasion of World Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday flagged off 200 electric buses in Delhi, marking a significant step in the Delhi Government’s sustainable transport initiative. The event also featured the Prime Minister planting a tree under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, aimed at fostering environmental awareness and individual responsibility toward nature.

The launch ceremony was attended by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav, and Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who oversees Industries, Food and Supplies, as well as Environment, Forest and Wildlife.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi shared a video message on his official X account urging citizens to intensify their efforts to protect the planet. “This #WorldEnvironmentDay, let’s deepen our efforts to protect our planet and overcome the challenges we face. I also compliment all those working at the grassroots to make our environment greener and better,” he wrote.

In the video, PM Modi highlighted India’s ancient tradition of environmental balance, quoting, “Prakriti Rakshati Rakshita” — those who protect nature, nature protects them. He stressed the interconnectedness of human actions and the environment, saying, “Yat pinde tat brahmande” — what exists in the body also exists in the universe.

The Prime Minister emphasized the need for collective global action, stating, “To protect the world’s climate, it is essential that every country rises above self-interest and thinks collectively.” He also applauded India’s ongoing efforts to reduce plastic usage, noting that the theme of this year’s Environment Day—freedom from plastic—is aligned with India’s multi-year campaign.

Separately, the sixth edition of the World Environment Expo (WEE 2025) was inaugurated at the India Expo Centre in Greater Noida by Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa. The three-day event brings together policymakers, sustainability experts, and global industry representatives to showcase innovations in clean energy, waste management, pollution control, and sustainable development.

Swadesh Kumar, Director of Indian Exhibition Services, highlighted the urgent need for a unified response to climate change during the event.

The launch of the electric buses and the ongoing environmental initiatives underscore India’s commitment to building a greener, more sustainable future.
