Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, following a prolonged illness. The Vatican confirmed his death in an official statement, noting that he died peacefully at 7:35 AM at his residence in Casa Santa Marta.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, formally announced the Pope’s passing, stating, “With deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis… His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church.”

The Pope’s death comes just one day after delivering his final Easter message and the traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to thousands gathered in Vatican Square. Despite recent health challenges, including a five-week hospital stay for double pneumonia, Pope Francis was able to fulfill his Easter Sunday duties.

“Christ is risen! These words capture the entire meaning of our existence, for we were not made for death but for life,” read a post from the Pope’s official X account on Sunday.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was the first Jesuit Pope and the first non-European pontiff in over 1,200 years. He was ordained in 1969 and became pope on March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. He chose the name Francis to honor Saint Francis of Assisi, known for his dedication to peace and humility.

Throughout his papacy, Francis was known for his compassion, reformist spirit, and tireless advocacy for the poor and marginalized. His Easter message this year emphasized peace, disarmament, and the release of prisoners, reflecting the global concerns that marked his pontificate.

A 14-day official mourning period has now begun. After this, a papal conclave will convene to elect the next Vicar of Christ.
