A five-member delegation of Supreme Court Judges, led by Justice BR Gavai, visited a relief camp in Churachandpur, Manipur, on Saturday to assess the situation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The delegation, comprising Justices BR Gavai, Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, MM Sundresh, KV Viswanathan, and N Kotishwar, arrived in Imphal earlier in the day.

As the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), Justice Gavai will virtually inaugurate legal services and medical camps across all districts of Manipur. Additionally, new legal aid clinics will be launched in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Ukhrul districts.

The judges’ delegation will oversee the distribution of essential relief materials to displaced individuals, ensuring that IDPs are connected with government welfare programs, including access to healthcare, pensions, employment schemes, and identity document reconstruction.

Welcoming the visit, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh raised concerns over the delay in imposing President’s Rule in Manipur.

“The Supreme Court had stated in August 2023 that there was an absolute breakdown of constitutional machinery. Despite this, it took the government almost 18-19 months to impose President’s Rule. Why was there no full-time Governor for six months? Why was a retired civil servant appointed instead?” Ramesh questioned.

Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence for months, prompting the deployment of paramilitary forces to restore order. The visit by Supreme Court judges marks a crucial intervention in addressing the humanitarian crisis and ensuring justice for those affected.
