Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his heartfelt greetings to the Indian Army on the occasion of the 77th Army Day, observed on January 15. In his message, PM Modi lauded the bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of the soldiers, ex-servicemen, and their families, emphasizing the pride the nation takes in their service.
“Heartiest greetings on Army Day to the brave soldiers of the Indian Army, ex-servicemen, brave women, and family members. The nation is proud of the indomitable courage, sacrifice, and incomparable dedication of its soldiers towards the nation,” PM Modi said.
Highlighting the Army’s professionalism and ability to tackle diverse challenges, the Prime Minister said, “The Indian Army’s dedication and capability to face various challenges have set high standards of service. Our Army has a glorious history of defending the country’s borders, managing disaster situations, and addressing internal challenges. As an organized, disciplined, and formidable force, the Indian Army has established a unique identity globally.”
PM Modi also reflected on the Indian Army’s progress in embracing innovation and modernization. “With changing times, the Indian Army is moving forward on the path of transformation. Unprecedented steps have been taken in the last decade to strengthen the armed forces, enhance the country’s strategic capabilities, and achieve self-reliance in defence production,” he remarked.
He expressed confidence in the Army’s role in nation-building, saying, “The determination and strong will of our armed forces will play a major role in building a self-reliant and developed India. I have full faith that our soldiers will continue to contribute to the nation’s progress with their unwavering determination and willingness to sacrifice everything for the country.”
The Prime Minister paid tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the nation. “The nation remembers with gratitude the valour, courage, sacrifice, and austerity of our soldiers in service of Mother India. On behalf of all countrymen, I salute the brave martyrs, brave women, and ex-servicemen on this important occasion of Army Day,” he added.
Army Day is celebrated annually on January 15 to commemorate the historic moment in 1949 when General (later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa assumed command of the Indian Army from General Francis Roy Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief, becoming the first Indian to hold the position post-independence.
The occasion serves as a reminder of the Army’s crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and its continued efforts toward modernization and excellence.
